Keeneland's Fall Meet and What to Wear to the Racetrack

Fall in Kentucky is one of my favorite times of year, especially during the Keeneland Fall Meet. The leaves turn bright shades of red, orange, and yellow, the air feels crisp, and the backroads are full of horses grazing in the fields. Living just fifteen minutes from Keeneland, I never get tired of those drives in October—it’s a Kentucky tradition I look forward to every year.

Everyone that knows us knows how much we love going to the different racetracks year-round, but Keeneland is our favorite. No matter how many times we go, it never loses its magic.

The Atmosphere at the Keeneland Fall Meet

There’s just something about Keeneland. The minute you walk in, you feel the excitement building. The crowd gets louder as the horses thunder down the stretch, the paddock fills with people watching the horses up close, and the smell of the track makes it feel like fall in Kentucky. To me, it almost smells like freshly printed racing forms mixed with crisp autumn air.

I love walking around, taking pictures, and just soaking up the atmosphere. Honestly, no matter where you are, Keeneland is special.

A Taste of Kentucky at Keeneland’s Fall Meet

Two of the most popular foods at Keeneland’s Fall Meet are burgoo and bread pudding. A warm bowl of burgoo on a cool day and a slice of bread pudding with bourbon sauce are Kentucky traditions that always hit the spot.

If you can’t make it to Keeneland, I’ve shared my own versions so you can try them at home—my hearty Burgoo recipe and my Kentucky Bread Pudding recipe.

Tips for Enjoying Keeneland’s Fall Meet

  1. Arrive early. Walk the grounds, stop by the paddock, and take it all in before the races start.

  2. Tailgate or sit inside. Either way, the experience is about being there.

  3. Grab some gear. The Keeneland shop is always worth a stop (I’ve collected more than one sweatshirt).

What to Wear to the Racetrack

Part of the fun of Keeneland’s Fall Meet is the fall fashion. It doesn’t have to be fancy—think boots, a dress, and a cozy layer for when the sun goes down. I’ve pulled together some of my favorite fall looks here on my Shop My Links page. I’ll keep adding new finds all season!
